The first marketing shift was the internet. Then websites came to the forefront. I remember we created a website for a customer in 1998. All it really was was an electronic brochure. Some websites are still like that today. No lead generation mechanisms, just a static page with digital information. There was no such thing as search engine optimization (SEO) or traffic ranking back then. The website was a means to provide the most current information and was very cutting edge.

The internet has a come a long way since then. It is a cog in most everyone’s marketing wheel. Everyone tries to stay on top of what is happening online whether it is SEO, page rank, pay-per-click campaigns, social media sites, local listings, blogging, etc. It can be completely overwhelming in a world where in the end you just want to attract new customers.

One of the biggest shifts in marketing (but not THE biggest) was the advent of social media. These platforms have allowed a change from “push” marketing or traditional marketing (radio, tv, print, billboard, etc) to “pull” marketing where we factor what others have to say about products and services in our decision making process. We also observe how businesses interact on social platforms and make judgements about whether we “like” them and want to do business with them. Social media has definitely been a huge shift in marketing and many businesses have moved dollars into this marketing segment. But social media marketing has also been hard to measure from a business generating standpoint and with so many platforms out there it’s hard to know which ones you should be on and how much of your precious time you should allocate to them.

We have been helping business with their social media for over five years. There have been many changes in five years and I’m sure the landscape will continue to change since change is the only thing that remains constant.
